How it all began
Rotary International is a global organization dedicated to the betterment of society through service, fellowship, and professional development. Founded in 1905 in Chicago, USA, Rotary has grown to become one of the world’s largest service organizations, with over 35,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
The name “Rotary” was inspired by the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the members’ offices.
The organization’s first official act of service was to raise funds for the construction of a public restroom in downtown Chicago, and soon after, Rotary clubs began to form in other cities across the United States.
In 1910, Rotary expanded internationally with the formation of a club in Winnipeg, Canada. This was followed by the establishment of clubs in London, England, and Dublin, Ireland, in 1911. Rotary’s growth continued throughout the 20th century, with the organization playing a significant role in the global effort to eradicate polio.
In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, which aimed to immunize all children against polio. Through partnerships with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and other organizations, Rotary has helped reduce the incidence of polio by more than 99% worldwide. Today, Rotary continues to work towards the goal of eradicating polio entirely.
In addition to its efforts to eradicate polio, Rotary has a long history of supporting education, health, and other humanitarian causes. Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self,” reflects the organization’s commitment to putting the needs of others before their own.
In recent years, Rotary has continued to evolve and adapt to changing times. The organization has embraced technology and social media to connect members and promote its mission, and has also expanded its focus to include issues such as environmental sustainability and peacebuilding.

The history of Rotary International is rooted in the vision of its founder, Paul Harris, a lawyer who wanted to create an organization that would bring together professionals from different fields to network and give back to their communities. On February 23, 1905, Harris and three other businessmen held their first meeting, which would later become known as the first Rotary club.
